As soon as you hold the phone to your ear, the caller's voice is automatically streamed to the other ear. Hearing the conversation in both ears results in superior sound quality and improved understanding.
It used to be that if you had a hearing aid and picked up the phone, you might have a program dedicated just for use with the phone. Sometimes it would be automatic. This is when there is a small coil in the aid to pick up the magnetic field of the telephone. When the phone gets close to the aid, the aid will automatically switch to the phone mode, cutting off (or at least reducing) the microphone. This muting of the microphone prevents feedback (the whistling sound that occurs when something is brought too close to a microphone). If the aid did not have an automatic phone mode, you would have to push a button on the aid to access it.
When you were on the phone, you would only hear it on the side you were using it on. Phonak has improved that with what they call their "DuoPhone” program. With DuoPhone, as soon as the phone conversation starts,” the signal is streamed in real time to the other ear, so the caller’s voice is heard in both ears." according to Phonak. This means better word understanding while listening on the phone, since using two ears is almost always the best way to hear.
